Although taken from nature, the source of imagery in my paintings may, at first be overlooked among life's visual priorities. At best most of what we see becomes throwaway memory. Yet it is the forgotten glance, impermanence of reflection, shadow and light, along with unexpected color changes in a day that I have chosen to paint. The unnoticed or neglected scenes we all miss. When I have found the image that I might want to paint, I use the intermediate eye of a camera to freeze time and to see nuances of that moment that I have not seen.
The anomalies of the camera lens also provide additional information that may only be in a photograph of that image. By incorporating these photo specific properties such as a softening and/or color rimmed edges, my paintings provide surprises to me and, I hope, to the viewer. From the beginning of the painting process I know what the image is, but I am never sure what the painting will actually look like.
